As some of you may already know, EiO Kid's Store is closing it's location at 3404 Cambie and moving to 1268 Pacific Boulevard in Yaletown. We will be sharing our new, shiny space with our big sister store, specialty beauty boutique, Beautymark.

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

I stumbled on this post by Real Simple magazine and was smitten! So adorable!

Here are three simple costumes you can easily make with things you already have at home:

Safari Guide

This young adventurer’s outfit begins with basic khaki shorts, white tee, and sneakers (or boots). The vest and binoculars are made from a paper grocery bag and empty toilet paper tubes. And what safari is complete without at least one “wild” animal?

Note the clever use of kraft paper envelopes as buttoned pockets!

"Au Naturel" Home Remedies

The dreaded flu season is lurking up on us! Here are
some natural ways to ease common cold symptoms with homemade remedies!

Saline Spray has a number of health benefits, specifically in relation to nasal congestion because it keeps the nasal passages flushed to avoid buildup of bacterial debris.

Recipe for Saline Spray:

Mix 1/2 tsp non-iodized salt in 8oz warm water
Store in empty spray bottle
Make new solution after 2 days

Lavender and Peppermint Oil have calming and soothing effects when applied to the temples or back of the neck. This can help relieve tension when your child is suffering from a headache. This technique is most effective when the two are combined.

Treat a sore throat with lemon and honey. The antimicrobial properties of these sources help kill viruses that cause irritation to the throat. Honey is also beneficial because it soothes inflamed tissues in the throat.

Apparently, mint has an antispasmodic effect on the body which helps treat flatulence. This herb relaxes the muscles, reducing gas and bloating. Find peppermint or spearmint capsules at your local health food store or drink mint tea. Note: Spearmint is milder than peppermint and is more suitable for kids' tummies.

Cambie Village Summer Festival

This past sunny Saturday, August 14th was Cambie Village's Annual Summer Street Festival - all the way from W. 5th Avenue to King Edward! We at EiO! had planned a big, big sidewalk sale for that day and it was a hit! Thought we could share some photos of the craziness.

We had grab bins starting from $1 and tons of brands including Robeez, Minnetonka, Converse, Vans, Handysitt, Peekaboo Beans, Mudpie, Manhattan Toy, Ganz, Goodbyn.. There were tables set up by Cambie Village outside our shop with balloons animals, crafts and other special treats.

We even had a special visit from Katrina of Peekaboo Beans, who brought a big smile and tons of balloons!

It was so good to see everyone out in Cambie Village enjoying the sun and visiting our neighbours.

Feels good to have freed up space for Fall & Winter items arriving daily. Fall is definitely in the air! We'll keep you posted about upcoming events like these.. Halloween fun anyone?

Canada Day Festivities

Despite being the gloomiest Canada Day in recent memory, we at EiO! still managed to have a fun-filled celebration. If you walked by during the few weeks leading up to July 1st, you might have noticed our patriotic window display. We cut out hundreds of construction paper maple leaves!

The morning of July 1st, we were ready to go with balloons, "I (heart) Canada" temporary tattoos, jumbo freezies and crafting supplies!

We were crafting very special Canadian flags by tracing little hand 'maple leaves' and colouring them in with red crayon to match the red bands on either side! An EiO! helper would then attach the personalized flags to a little bamboo skewer "pole" and watch the kiddies happily wave them all the way down Cambie Street.

Party Tips for Tot Birthdays

Every weekend, EiO! is full of parents and kids looking for the perfect birthday gifts! One of the best parts of our job is getting to see kids excitedly picking out wrapping papers for their friends and the way their eyes light up when they see the finished package. Gift wrapping is always complimentary at EiO! Photos in this post are of some of our recent favourites.

In this season's urbanbaby & toddler magazine we found a great article about planning and hosting a fun and easy birthday party for your child. A few of the best tips:

Pick a theme
First, pick a theme (ex. pirate, princess, animals, flowers - whatever your child fancies) and plan things around that. Purchase or make invitations to fit the theme, and get decorations, plates and napkins, and goody bags (if you're doing them) to tie things together.

Limit guests
How many little guests should you have? The younger your child is, the fewer guests you should have. Try keeping it to close family and friends for toddlers. Three guests, maximum, is plenty for a child under five years.

Invitations
Whether you buy them or make them, hand-deliver them or e-mail them, there are key pieces of info you need to include aside from the obvious date, time and place: RSVP date and contact; if the parents should stay; what meals (if any) will be served; and duration of the party. Ask parents to notify you of any allergies you should be aware of as well!

Play Games
Doing two short games is enough for those under five years. Remember, a toddler's attention span is limited! Simple games like Pin the Tail on the Donkey work well.

The Birth of WubbaNub... They say "necessity is the mother of invention " and for Carla Schneider, it was an absolute necessity that she soothe her infant baby on their first vacation as a family. What was supposed to be a relatively relaxing, blissful time was replaced with non-stop fussing and crying. After an entire night of the ever-persistent "missing pacifier syndrome", Carla knew she needed to take matters into her own hands. She found the hotel sewing kit and took her baby's favorite soft plush toy and sewed the pacifier right onto it. Thus, a happy ending for the Schneider family's vacation and the birth of the first WubbaNub!

Ever since we unpacked out very first box of Ecotronic Torches, they have been flying off the shelves! Great homemade lunch ideas for the kiddies inspired by LunchBots and brought to you by GOOP!

Homemade Vegetable Sushi

For two rolls:

2 sheets of toasted nori seaweed
½ cup of cooked short-grain brown rice
1/2 teaspoon agave nectar
1/2 teaspoon rice wine vinegar
6 spears of cooked and cooled asparagus (and/or strips of cucumber, carrot, cooked mushrooms, etc.)

Lay a piece of plastic wrap down on your work surface and put one sheet nori on top. Mix the rice with the agave and vinegar and put half of the mixture on the nori in an even line about an inch from the bottom. Evenly lay 3 spears of asparagus (or whatever vegetable you’re using) on the rice. Starting from the bottom, roll the nori around the rice, using the plastic wrap to help you get the roll tight. Using a very sharp knife, cut the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces.

Homemade Granola Bars

1 1/3 cups quick-cooking (not instant) rolled oats, divided
a pinch each fine salt, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg and ground ginger
1/4 cup flax seeds
1 cup dried apricots, roughly chopped (or any combination of roughly chopped dried fruit and/or nuts)
1/4 cup canola oil
1/4 cup high quality maple syrup
2 tablespoons brown rice syrup (a great substitute for corn syrup, available at lundberg.com)

Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Line a 8” square baking pan with parchment paper, letting a bit of excess paper hang over the sides.

Grind 1/3 cup of the oats in a food processor until powdery. Add them to a large mixing bowl with the remaining oats, the salt and spices, flax seeds, and apricots. In a smaller bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients and then stir them into the dry ingredients.

Put the mixture in the prepared pan, smoothing the top with a rubber spatula. Bake for 1/2 hour, or until evenly browned. Remove from oven and let cool for about 15 minutes. Remove to a cutting board (the parchment paper will act as a sort-of sling, making this very easy). Cut into individual granola bars.

We're new to the blogging world...this is our first post. Our store is ever evolving, this photo was taken about a year ago - the store has changed so much! We hope you can come by for a visit, there's lots to browse - and if you have kids be sure to bring them. EiO provides free gift wrapping and friendly, knowledgeable staff.
